Minister for Planning, Development and Reforms Ahsan Iqbal said on Monday that the government would achieve the target of 100 percent enrolment of children in schools by 2017-18.

This would be a step towards attaining 100 per cent literacy rate in the country, said the minister while addressing a ceremony held at Karlot Residential College in connection with International Literacy Day.

The minister said that keeping in view that Pakistan is one of the few countries where a large number of eligible children are out of school, the government has announced an “education emergency” to achieve the targets set by Education for All and Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

The government has earmarked Rs 12.5 billion for education in budget for Fiscal Year 2014-15.

“All children will be enrolled at schools and taught an exemplary curriculum which will make them creative and innovative,” he added.

He also reiterated that the government has resolved to make the country one of the top 10 economies of the world by 2047.

The minister said that this year’s literacy day theme “Literacy and Sustainable Development” means “we should utilise all natural resources, including water and environment, with responsibility so that our next generations should also get benefitted from the same”.

The minister advised the school children to set a target and work hard to achieve it, adding that by doing so, they could contribute towards the country’s development.

He also asked the media to play its role in highlighting Pakistan’s image as a responsible country which is working hard to attain high education standards.

Speaking on the occasion, National Assembly member Nafeesa Khattak urged the government to increase the budget allocation for primary and secondary schools to increase enrolment.

Private Schools Network President Dr Afzal Babar said that the purpose of commemorating International Literacy Day was to convey a message to the international community that the Pakistan Government is giving special attention to the education sector.

He urged the government to support private schools so that children from poor and lower middle class backgrounds could also get maximum educational benefits.

  1. Minister Ahsan, you must educate yourself before taking a podium to announce the year of 100 percent literacy. You will fail in this goal because your mandate is rigged election.
