Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Raheel Sharif urged graduating young military officers of National University of Science and Technology (NUST) to prepare to defend the country in the face of a “growingly complex threat environment”.

A press release issued by the Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) on Thursday says that the army chief, while advising graduation officers, said: “While leading your men into combat, as young officers you must also inspire them by your knowledge, character, courage and competence”.

The statement also says that he urged the graduating young military officers to “equip themselves both mentally and physically to ensure the defence of motherland in the face of a growingly complex threat environment”.

Earlier on arrival at the NUST, General Raheel Sharif was received by Lieutenant General Ikram Ul Haq, Inspector General Training and Evaluation (IGT& E) and Lieutenant General Muhammad Asghar Rector NUST.

Army troops are currently engaged in the Zarb-e-Azb operation in North Waziristan aimed at ridding the area of local and foreign militants.

The operation was launched on June 15 following a brazen militant attack on Karachi’s international airport and the failure of peace talks between the government and Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) negotiators.

A statement issued by the military on Wednesday put the official number of “terrorists” killed in Operation Zarb-e-Azb at 910 and added that 82 Pakistani soldiers had also lost their lives during the North Waziristan offensive.
