Punjab cops want new JIT to probe Model Town tragedy

Punjab Police Department has suggested the provincial government to constitute a new Joint Investigation Team (JIT) to probe into the Model Town tragedy.

According to sources, Punjab Police on Tuesday formally requested the provincial government to form a team in this regard. Police have already included the sections of the anti-terrorism act in Model Town tragedy’s first information report (FIR) that was lodged against the prime minister, Punjab chief ministers and other federal ministers.

The sections were included to fulfil the demand of Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) Chairman Dr Tahirul Qadri who had rejected the FIR, saying that section of the anti-terrorism act was not included in the report.

A police crackdown at Minahjul Quran secretariat had left 14 people dead and scores of others injured on June 17.
