Breaking the disquieting silence on Thursday, Director General of Intelligence Bureau Aftab Sultan refuted allegations that the civilian intelligence agency had distributed money among journalists and TV anchors.

“The allegations are baseless and there is no truth in it,” the IB chief said in a short statement.

In one of his routine speeches, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan had alleged that the IB chief, on the directives of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, had distributed money among TV anchors and journalists to distort the image of the PTI in order to save the government’s face.

Lists were reportedly circulated on social media containing names of journalists who had allegedly received funds approximating to Rs 10,000,000 from the IB chief for engaging in propaganda against the PTI chief.

Imran has hit out hardest at the Jang Group for allegedly carrying out a ‘vilification campaign’ against him and has accused the group owner of supporting the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) in alleged rigging in the May 2013 elections.
