Punjab Chief Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif has initiated an integrated project “Elimination of Child & Bonded Labour” at a cost of Rs 5,159.629 million in all 36 districts of Punjab.
The project will involve elimination of worst forms of child labour and bonded labour particularly at brick kilns along with rehabilitation of freed labour for their economic empowerment.
For the purpose, Punjab Labour Department, with the technical support of ILO organized an orientation session for Provincial Survey on Child Labour, Child Labour Monitoring (CLM) and Reporting System (RS) at Centre for Improvement of Working Conditions and Environment, Township Monday.
ILO Pakistan Country Director Francisco D’O Video, Secretaries P&D, Labour, Senior Child Labour Specialist ILO for South Asia Shereen Khan, DG Punjab Bureau of Statistics, Project Director Javaid Gill and others participated in the session.
According to the session discussion, child labour survey at provincial level could be conducted after the 18th Constitutional Amendment as subject of labour had been transferred to the provinces. The strategy of child labour monitoring and reporting system is being used internationally to sustain interventions to eradicate child labour, the participants informed.
It was recommended that child labour monitoring and reporting system introduced by the ILO in its projects under ILO-IPEC should also be introduced in Punjab under the integrated project.
ILO experts from New Delhi and Geneva shared their expertise and methodology on child labour survey. National experts from Sialkot, Sahiwal and other districts also shared their local experiences regarding their success for elimination of child labour.
