Court asks IG prisons to file reply in one week

The Sindh High Court (SHC) on Monday gave time to the Sindh IG prisons for filing a report on installation of cell phone jammers in the penitentiaries across the province.

A non-government organisation, United Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, moved the court for installation of jammers on the premises of prisons in the province.

The petitioner, Rana Faizal Hussan, general secretary of NGO, submitted that the Karachi central prison housed the around 4,500 inmates which included high-profile prisoners, terrorists and target killers associated with some political parties.

He told the two-judge bench that the gangsters were operating their network through the cellular phones from the prisons, where contraband narcotics reach with the connivance of the jail administration.

The petitioner submitted that he sent several applications to the authorities concerned for installation of jammers, but the equipment was installed in only Central Prison, Karachi. He prayed to the court to direct the respondents to ensure the installation of cellular phone jammers in all prisons across the province.

Hearing of the case was adjourned till September 01.
