Shujaat claims army has given 48-hour ultimatum to Sharif

Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) chief Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain Thursday claimed that the army had given a 48 hour ultimatum to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, adding that preparations were underway to hold a referendum for the formation of a national government.

Talking to reporters, the PML-Q chief claimed that the army was against Sharif “because he had opened far too many fronts with the armed forces”. He said that the protesters would not end their sit-ins until the prime minister steps down from office.

“No one will back down from the demand of registration of cases against the Sharif brothers and other PML-N leaders over the Model Town tragedy,” he said.

Shujaat’s statement comes a day after the army said it didn’t want to intervene in the political crisis which has developed as a result of the protests led by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf and Pakistan Awami Tehreek.

Meanwhile, sources said Shujaat and his cousin Chaudhry Pervez Elahi met US Ambassador Richard Olson Thursday.

According to sources close to the PML-Q leadership, the meeting which took place at the ambassador’s office discussed the prevailing political situation in Pakistan. The ongoing anti-government protests in Islamabad were also discussed during the meeting, the sources added.

  1. Nawaz Sharif’s current arrogance is a reminder of Mubarak from Egypt and Gaddafi from Libya. Nawaz needs to remember that the more arrogant they are, the harder they fall. Nawaz’s biggest problem is his senior ministers and advisors who distort information and give him a false account of ground reality which is pushing him further and further towards the deep end or the gallows.
