Undermining democracy

Imran Khan and Tahirul Qadri have let army put its foot in national politics, again

The talks between the government and PTI and PAT have finally begun after a signal from Rawalpindi. It would have been better if these had taken place at the call of the Leader of the Opposition. The display of arrogance on one side and intransigence on the other created the present situation. Had PPP’s policy of defusing tensions through talks been followed, there would have been no room for confrontation with PAT. Similarly, if the PTI’s demands for recounting in four constituencies had been accepted six months back, the crisis would not have blown up in the government’s face.

The PTI and PAT leaders have acted recklessly. The PTI has particularly indulged in infantile politics. Civil disobedience, refusal to pay taxes and utility bills can be justified only in liberation struggles conducted against colonial rulers. The slogans are unimaginable in a country with a working democracy, independent courts and free media. It was highly irresponsible on the part of Imran Khan to rubbish Parliament and announce resignations from the assemblies. The party has tarnished its image through irresponsible pronouncements.

Irrespective of the outcome of the inglorious standoff between the government and the PTI-PAT combine, the no-holds-barred tussle has given a serious jolt to the political system. The hopes that the peaceful transfer of power after May 2013 elections would further strengthen democracy and allow the government to be in the driving seat in policy making, have been dashed to the ground. The army has emerged as the arbitrator between the government and those opposing it. During the last two days Interior Minister and Punjab CM called on the COAS twice while the PM also had talks with the army chief. The army has advised the contenders to act with patience and sagacity and resolve the prevailing impasse through “meaningful dialogue”. It appears that army would continue the sharing of space with the government in days to come, calling the shots vis-a-vis relations with India and Afghanistan and in matters concerning internal security.
