Lahore’s Faisal Town Police forwards petition to legal branch for advice

The lawyers of Minhajul Quran International (MQI) Monday approached the Faisal Town Police Station in Lahore and submitted a copy of the session court orders for registration of case against Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif and others on account of Model Town carnage which claimed lives of several Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) workers.
The MQI lawyers, led by Mansoor Afridi, called SHO Sharif Sindhu, who was not present at the station, and requested him to file the case in compliance with court orders. Later on, the police forwarded the petition to the legal branch for legal advice.
Earlier yesterday, the argument between the police and the lawyers continued for a long time. Lawyers pleaded that there was no uncertainty in the verdict of the court so their case should be registered for the application filed on June 19.
The station clerk said that though court orders had been received yet they could not proceed immediately in the absence of SHO whereas the lawyers said that there was no way that the police could back out from filing the case after clear orders from courts.
Earlier on Saturday, a Lahore session court, hearing Model Town tragedy case, ordered to book the Sharif brothers on account of TMQ workers’ deaths which took place on June 17 in Model Town Lahore as a result of PAT-police clashes. The court ordered to file charges against the key accused, including the listed police officers.
The MQI petition maintained that instead of launching the FIR on MQI’s behalf, police registered the FIR by itself, which was unconstitutional. The petition said that police did not take the right legal course and therefore, all these people were also named among the accused by PAT.
