The Karachiites Tuesday responded coolly to PTI chief’s call vis-a-vis non-payment of utility bills and other relevant taxes.
A large number of people, with vast majority comprising women, could be witnessed carrying their water, electricity and gas bills for depositing in designated banks located near their homes. “Long queues in particular could be seen on Monday, the last date to deposit gas bill for the current month,” said manager of a bank located in Gulshan-e-Iqbal.
Monday was the immediate next day of the call made by Imran Khan on Sunday evening and was frequently flashed by local channels yet was simply disapproved by the people, many of whom still consider Imran Khan to be charismatic.
“I have no doubt about his sincerity of intentions yet do not think that such calls be given as they have direct impact on functioning of the state,” said Mrs Ahmed, a housewife.
It were not just the banks as there was no dearth of local vehicle owners keen to pay off their annual vehicle tax at the relevant office located in Civic Centre. Interestingly, even the container owners, carrying imported goods of wide range, from the ports of Karachi to other parts of the country, were witnessed clearing off their dues, mainly taxes as well as challans at the designated banks.
The Pakistan customs officials told APP that they may not be in a position to tell the exact amount deposited during past two days yet can mention with authority that there was no decline in the amount usually collected by their department.
