All parties want democracy to continue: JI chief

Governor Punjab Muhammad Sarwar and Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Ameer Sirajul Haq said that all parties have a consensus on the continuity of democratic process in the country.

Addressing a joint news conference after their meeting in Lahore on Saturday, they said efforts are being made to resolve the prevailing political crisis through dialogue.

The governor appreciated JI’s positive role in resolving the crises.

He stressed the need for resolving issues amicably within constitutional parameters.

Haq has called the electoral reforms necessity of the time and warned against any unconstitutional step.

He highlighted the need of an electoral system which ensures no rigging allegations after an election.

He said that all political parties believe in the supremacy of the constitution and the Parliament. He said the demands of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) are positive and urged the federal ministers to observe restraint.

Haq expressed the confidence that a way out would soon be found to resolve the ongoing political standoff.

He said democracy is a solution to all political problems adding that the military does not want any unconstitutional change in the country.

The leaders contacted each other after anti-government protestors led by PAT Chairman Imran Khan and PAT Chairman Dr Tahirul Qadri arrived in the federal capital to hold sit-in till Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s resignation.

Meanwhile, former interior minister Rehman Malik also held telephonic conversation with the Punjab governor. Both have agreed to handle the situation politically.
