LAHORE-

Containers installed on major arteries across Punjab province, ahead of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) Azadi March in Islamabad on August 14, were ordered to be removed by the Lahore High Court (LHC) on Wednesday, a private news channel reported.

The court was hearing a case challenging the installment of the containers.

Justice Mehmood Bhatti of LHC remarked that taking away the fundamental rights of citizens in the name of security will not be allowed and issued directives to authorities to remove all the blockades across Punjab including the provincial capital of Lahore.

According to latest updates, Punjab Government has filed a review appeal against LHC’s orders to remove the containers.

The government has stated that the containers have been installed for security reasons

LHC on Tuesday ordered the police to remove containers installed around Lahore’s Model Town to minimise the trouble faced by citizens and had also directed Lahore district coordination officer to ensure petrol supply is the city continues smoothly.

The orders were passed by LHC’s Justice Syed Iftikhar Hussain Shah during hearing of a petition challenging road blockades, shortage of fuel and arrest of the PTI workers allegedly by the government.

LHC’s three-member bench had also restrained the police from arresting PTI workers on Tuesday.
