Sindh United Party (SUP) Chief Jalal Mahmood Shah on Sunday supported the Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaf (PTI) agenda for political reforms in the country but refused to be a part of Imran Khan-led Azadi March in Islamabad.
Talking to PPI at Hyder Manzil in Karachi, Shah said his party had always supported voices for free and fair elections in the country but unfortunately every election after 1970 was rigged. A system like India should be introduced in Pakistan where election commission should be empowered to take any decision whether changes in bureaucracy and administrative setup in order to ensure free and fair elections, he said.
Shah supported Imran Khan’s demand for recounting in certain constituencies and said Khan had rightly raised voice against rigging in elections. “We also think that elections in 2013 were massively rigged but staging protests and toppling a government is not a solution to free and fair elections instead all political parties should sit together to devise a mechanism for it. His party is not in support of midterm elections in the country and the incumbent government should be allowed to complete its tenure for the betterment of democracy.”
The SUP leader condemned Punjab and federal governments for creating hindrance in the way of Tehreek-i-Minhajul Quran (TMQ) leader Tahirul Qadri to stage protest over killings of his activists, however, he rejected the political agenda of the TMQ leader and said that it was against the democratic norms.
He also urged Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to pay heed towards the demand of Imran Khan so that this turmoil in the country could be tackled wisely.
Giving his view of reforms in election commission of Pakistan, the SUP chief said that instead of involvement of political parties, the chief justice of Pakistan and chief justices of high courts should appoint the election commissioner of Pakistan and provincial election commissioners.
