Poverty forces mother to attempt suicide along with 2 kids

A 50-year-old woman tried to commit suicide along with her two minor children by jumping into Rice Canal on Thursday noon but irrigation employees rescued them.

Rasheeda, wife of Juman Jeho, came to Rice Canal along with her two kids, 7-year old Nida and 8-year Naveed, and jumped into the canal. On seeing her jumping into the canal, irrigation employees who were also present there dived into the canal and pulled her out along with her two babies.

They informed the police immediately which brought her to police station. While talking to media, the aged woman said with tears in her eyes that she had no money to buy dowry for her daughter whose marriage was scheduled on coming Sunday, hence, she had no choice but to end her life.

She further said that her husband was a retired employee of railways and he too refused to help. She entrusted her on interest with a Bagri woman but despite full payment she was not returning gold and demanding more money, she complained.

The elderly woman said she had two daughters and four sons. She said being very poor and finding no help from any corner, she thought of jumping into the canal and end her life along with her two minor kids. SHO Sartaj Jagirani said she wanted to finish herself due to poverty but was rescued by the irrigation employees.
