Minister for Science and Technology Zahid Hamid on Wednesday informed the National Assembly that the government was fully aware of the importance of National Commission for Human Rights and assured the Commission would be constituted very soon.

Responding to a question of Dr Nafeesa Shah, the minister apprised that the commission would be established under the National Commission for Human Rights Act, 2012.

“The prime minister in consultation with the leader of the opposition has recently forwarded three names for each post to a parliamentary committee for hearing and confirmation of any one person for each post,” he said adding that the appointment of the chairperson and members will be notified after the procedural requirements in due course of time.

Responding another question, Hamid said that the National Commission on Status of Women (NCSW) has taken various pro-active steps for the protection of status and rights of women. He told the house that the NCSW monitored women’s participation in the General Elections 2013 and also set up a complaint mechanism before the elections and communicated area specific complaints to the Election Commission of Pakistan.

Hamid told that aggressive lobbying was also done with the provincial governments for the restoration of 33 percent women’s representations in local government.
