The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has clarified that the government is not entitled to open four constituencies of Punjab for investigation into rigging reports.
According to an ECP spokesman, only the election tribunals are entitled to reopen Punjab’s four constituencies for verification of results, adding that the government and the ECP are not authorised in this regard.
Both ECP and the government have no authority over the tribunals which are independent, he said.
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan had called for verification of voters’ thumb impression initially in four constituencies of the National Assembly, blaming the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz for massive vote rigging. He then demanded a complete audit of results of the general elections held in May 2013.
But now Khan wants the government to resign and new elections to be held and is all set to lead a massive anti-government protest in Islamabad on August 14.
