MNA Arif Alvi says if they resign, corrupt people might occupy their seats

Says govt failed to fulfil promises over past one year; can’t wait for four more years to set system in place

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) lawmakers said on Friday that they would not resign from the assemblies, including Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly unless electoral reforms are introduced in the country.

Addressing a press conference at Karachi Press Club along with PTI’s members of Sindh Assembly, MNA Arif Alvi said that the entire system was based on corruption and that was why they are protesting against it.

He said that if they would resign from their assembly seats without electoral reforms then there is possibility of corrupt people occupying our seats. For the past one year, the government is saying that it will fulfil our promises but it has failed to do so, forcing PTI to stage protest against the government, he said.

We are waiting since 60 years for this system to change but now it is enough and we will not wait for four more years, he said adding that PTI would stage its ‘Azadi March’ on August 14 in Islamabad.

Alvi criticised the Sindh government over the Karachi situation and said that when people come on roads, they fall prey to targeted killings and when they go out at the sea side to enjoy their vacations, they fall prey to drowning. Sindh government is responsible for the loss of almost 50 lives at Karachi Sea View, he said, adding that Clifton Cantonment Board and Karachi Port Trust is also responsible.

He said that the Sindh government’s statement of imposition of ban on bathing at Sea View under section 144 is “a pack of lies”. Instead of safeguarding peoples’ lives, the government is making lame excuses, he said, adding that people were dying and the officials responsible were enjoying foreign trips.

He called for a judicial enquiry into the deaths and said that the culprits should be brought to justice.

MPA Khurram Sher Zaman demanded the chief justice of Pakistan to take notice of the incident and asked Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah why security measures were not taken before the incident.

PTI member MPA Hafeezuddin said that protective net and boards inscribed with precautions for bathing should be placed at the beaches.
