Cellular phone companies will not activate Subscriber Identification Modules (SIMs) on the previous pattern, starting Friday.

According to media reports, a Pakistan Telecommunication Authority notification says all mobile phone companies have been directed to stop issuing SIMs on the previous pattern and activate them only after biometric verification.

The notification said that from Friday, SIMs sale and customer service activities throughout the country will only be possible through company-owned customer service centers, franchises and authorised retail outlets equipped with biometric verification machines.

The SIM buyer will give a thumb impression on the biometric device for online verification of his details by National Database and Registration Authority and upon successful verification, the SIM will be delivered to the purchaser.

The notifications states that the newly issued SIM will be activated within 30 minutes of successful bio-metric verification.
