Setting aside the result for the May 11 general elections for Karachi’s PS-114 constituency on Friday, an election tribunal has ordered re-election for the constituency located in Karachi’s Mehmoodabad area.
The election was won by Irfanullah Marwat of the Pakistan Muslim League – Nawaz (PML-N) with Abdur Rauf Siddiqui of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) as runner-up.
Only 11 per cent verified votes in Karachi’s PS-114, reveals Nadra. Son-in-law of former president Ghulam Ishaq Khan, Marwat, had won the election against Siddiqui with a margin of around 7,000 votes in the May 11 polls.
Rauf Siddiqi had challenged the victory of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz’s (PML-N) Irfanullah Marwat. Siddiqi had accused Marwat of rigging the elections held on May 11, 2013.
The Election Commission of Pakistan will announce the date for re-election. The PML-N candidate can challenge the tribunal’s decision in a higher court. The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) had informed the election tribunal that 17,504 votes cast in the PS-114 were bogus as they were either cast by someone else or had invalid national identity card numbers.
Siddiqui had later filed an application challenging Marwat’s victory in which he had alleged that Marwat had rigged the election by making the entire polling staff of the constituency hostage in blatant violation of election laws.
