UoK director finance kidnapped on way to office

University of Karachi (UoK) Finance Department Director Qazi Zafar Abbas was kidnapped Thursday morning while he was on his way to his office from his residence in Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Karachi.

He was already facing a criminal case regarding embezzlement of funds of the UoK amounting to Rs 10.5 million. He was posted at the Department of Urdu of Federal Urdu University prior to his present job as Finance Department Director of the university.

Some armed and unidentified persons intercepted him and forced him to go with the kidnappers on gun point. The family of the abductee UoK official claimed that the kidnappers were in police uniform. The UoK vice chancellor has also confirmed Abbas’ kidnapping.

This is the 15th incident of kidnapping in Karachi wherein the kidnappers were in police uniforms. The latest incident was of Karachi Traders Association Chairman Muhammad Aslam Bhatti who was also picked by persons in police uniform. However, senior police officials have expressed doubt that the abductee might be in custody of some investigation agency.

Meanwhile, Sindh High Court Acting Chief Justice Faisal Arab while treating a letter from SHC Justice Aqeel Ahmed Abbasi as a constitutional petition summoned Sindh Home Secretary Dr Niaz Ali Abbasi, Sindh Rangers director general and Acting Inspector General of Police Ghulam Haider Jamali.

SHC Justice Aqeel Ahmed Abbasi in his letter to the acting SHC CJ stated that his brother-in-law Qazi Zafar Abbasi had been kidnapped while he was on his way to office from his residence in Gulshan-e Iqbal Karachi.
