Former chief justice of Pakistan (CJP) Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry’s son Arsalan Iftikhar has written a letter to religious scholars, seeking their opinion over Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan’s eligibility under articles 62 and 63 of the Constitution given that Khan had allegedly concealed having a “love child”.

Addressing Council of Islamic Ideology (CII) chairman and 36 Islamic scholars from different schools of thoughts, Arsalan’s letter seeks “advice” over Khan’s affair.

The letter says that Khan has had relations with an American woman in the past and the relationship resulted in a child out of wedlock, named as Tyrian White. The letter mentions that Khan has never denied having relations with the lady nor has he denied the child while American courts have already decided the case against him.

Stating the case, the letter seeks advice of the religious scholars about the matter, asking if Khan’s action qualifies as an “immoral act” and falls under “gunaah-e-kabeera” (grave sin). The letter also questions Khan’s eligibility for parliament if his act qualifies as gravely immoral.

Arsalan has said that the advice given by the scholars in response to this letter will be made part of the reference that he is planning to file for Khan’s disqualification from the assembly.

Earlier, following Khan’s criticism, Arsalan had announced to move courts against him after resigning as vice chairman of Balochistan Board of Investment, a post he was given by Balochistan Chief Minister Muhammad Abdul Malick.

Khan had blamed Pakistan Muslim League – Nawaz (PML-N) government to have rewarded the post to Arsalan because his father Iftikhar Chaudhry had allegedly aided PML-N in rigging general glections 2013. After resigning from the post, Arsalan appeared in various TV interviews and protested for being victimised by Imran Khan.

Later, Arsalan requested nomination papers of Khan from Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on 7th of July which were handed over to him on July 11. Arsalan had announced that he would turn to religious scholars and seek an answer about Khan’s candidacy after receiving the documents from ECP.
