Fighting between Libyan militias battling for control of Libya’s Tripoli International Airport has resumed, breaking a two-day-long ceasefire.
Speaking to a foreign news outfit, a local resident of the area said that after the fighting resumed, there was heavy shelling “just behind the airport”, a reference to the Qasr Ben Gahsir district which lies on Tripoli International’s northern most boundary. He could not say for sure whether Zintani forces still held control over the facility.
Rocket fires can be heard across the Libyan capital and black plumes of smoke can be seen rising from where the fighting is taking place.
The hostilities at the airport began one week ago between rival militia, causing colossal damage and leaving dozens dead. The renewed aggression has ended a ceasefire brokered by Tripoli Local Council, which was characterised by occasional clashes.
A few days back, the Libyan government raised the possibility of international intervention in the face of the violence. It has yet to respond to the renewed attacks.
