The Sindh High Court (SHC) granted bail to an employee of National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) with surety of Rs 10 million in a case pertaining to theft of prize bonds worth Rs 19 million from a locker of the bank.
Haji Mateenuddin and Salamullah Qureshi were found guilty of a criminal breach of trust and misappropriating prize bonds worth Rs 19 million by a banking court in Karachi. The court had sentenced both accused to seven-year imprisonment and imposed fine of Rs 9.5million each.
Later, Haji Mateenuddin moved the SHC against his conviction and filed an application for suspension of conviction during pendency of the appeal. Appellant, who is 66-year-old, submitted through his counsel that he had served two years of sentence and requested the court to suspend the operation of verdict handed down by the trial court.
A division bench headed by Justice Muhammad Ali Mazhar suspended the operation of impugned judgment. The bench ordered release of appellant on bail subject to furnishing surety of Rs10 million.
