Former Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi’s sex conviction has been overturned by an appeal court in Italy.

In a significant victory, the 77-year-old won an appeal against his conviction for having sex with an underage prostitute.

The centre-right leader had been sentenced to a seven-year jail term which he will no longer need to serve.

However he will need to complete one year’s community service from a separate tax fraud case.

Berlusconi was accused of paying for sex with former nightclub dancer, Kharima El Mahroug, better known as ‘Ruby the Heartstealer’, when she was under 18, and for abusing his authority to get her released from police custody over theft accusations.
