‘France bans Pakistani students for PhD’

Higher Education Commission (HEC) Chairman Dr Mukhtar Ahmed has informed the National Assembly (NA) that France had banned Pakistani students from pursuing doctoral level studies in the field of Nuclear Science, Agriculture and Dairy.

During a meeting of NA Standing Committee on Education Monday, the HEC chairman said that reportedly eight percent of PhD students did not come back to the country after completing studies in foreign countries.

Briefing the NA committee presided over by Gulzar Khan, Dr Ahmed said that as many as 600 students were studying in France and all scholarships had been awarded on open merit. He said students faced difficulties when money was not sent to them on time, adding that as per Prime Minister’s Pay Back Student Fees Scheme, more than 45,000 students’ fees had been refunded.

  1. Students from Pakistan have always scored the highest marks in the world in many of the global examinations. I just give some As in the last year examination Pakistani students achieve first position globally in ACCA. Many Pakistani scholars has win awards at Cambridge. And if we talk about teachers just a recent example of University of Management Sciences (LUMS) Associate Professor Dr Umar has been recognized by the MIT Technology Review as one of the top 35 innovators (TR35) in the world. Man Pakistani students has win gold medal in international contest. So this is against the international norms of Education. And also against the country which has the best of best scholars.

  2. Pakistan is a country where there is a huge number of talented students. There are two ways of handling the difficulties either to alter the difficulties or to make yourself altered so that to meet those difficulties up. Pakistani talent have always been proved it worth when ever it is challenged now here again is a challenge where Pakistan PhD candidates have denied access to get education in France. This is a clear cut discrimination and one can now imagine how the international community have been treating Pakistan and its people on discriminatory clauses. Its against the human rights law and also against education laws. Nuclear sciences students are flourishing themselves and are up to the mark in the international index. This is another way of undermining the capabilities of Pakistan's nuclear domain.

  3. What an irony, HEC has no money to pay for the students who are studying in foreign universities in various disciplines. These students are real assets and they must be facilitated. If government will not offer scholarships then how Pakistan will make progress in academia? Moreover, new government has reduced funds allocated for education sector. As a result, thousands of the students have suffered. Ironically, none of the single political leader has raised this issue in upper or lower house. Government should address this issue as soon as possible.

  4. Education is not restricted to borders or state systems. It is an universal right of every single individual to get acquaint itself with knowledge of its own choice and wishes. The Western world voiced a lot about freedom, liberty and equality of individuals. But this act of banning by French government totally evades the high words for these human rights activist country. It resembles like we are in living in dark ages interestingly in twenty first century.

  5. Attacks on Muslim establishments are on the increase in France. Most recently, the Grand Mosquée in Paris was daubed with racist slogans. Islamophobia and xenophobia are also featuring more prominently in the public discourse. Now this news is perfect proof of such racism.. why they are banning our students to do PHD in nuclear science?? though Pakistan recently became associate member of CERN.. France should treat our students on merit..

  6. Pakistan has achieved the ranks in science and technology, membership to CERN is one of them. France needs to think over again keeping in view the potential of students and keeping in view the future needs of Pakistan; there is a need to produce more number of PhDs. These researchers, who have worked on problems of crucial importance to Pakistan, will play a leading role in the production of knowledge workers with a potential to take Pakistan in the ranks of developed nations.
