The federal government seems to be building pressure on Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) chief Dr Tahirul Qadri as the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has written to various institutions, including Interpol, seeking details of assets of the reformist cleric in foreign countries, it is learnt.
Sources in FIA told Pakistan Today that the Agency has written a letter to Interpol and the National Crime Agency in Britain among others, asking them to provide Qadri’s asset details. The FIA has also moved the Punjab Social Welfare Department to know under which constitution the Minhajul Quran Secretariat is allowed to operate. A letter has also been sent to the State Bank governor, requesting an audit of Qadri and his party assets.
Sources said that the Agency suspected Qadri of money laundering, claiming that between 2011 and 2014, large amounts of money was transferred to various accounts registered under the name of the Minhajul Quran Secretariat in Lahore.
The sources said that the government believed that Qadri was working to destabilise the current democratic setup.
