At least seven personnel of the Elite Force and Station House Officer (SHO) of Sabzazar Police Station, Amir Saleem were arrested on Thursday for opening direct fire at supporters of the Pakistan Awami Tehreek during the Model Town clashes on June 17.
Sources told Pakistan Today that a joint investigating committee is recording the statements of all police officers and personnel who participated in the Model Town operation on June 17. After the statements were recorded, the authorities ordered the arrest of Inspector Amir Saleem along with seven members of the Elite Force including their in-charge.
Sources claimed that the arrested policemen had been caught on cameras of news channels when they were firing at the protesters, adding that more arrests would be made as investigations into the incident progressed.
As many as 14 PAT workers were killed and 80 others were wounded in the clashes. The Punjab government had subsequently formed a judicial tribunal comprising Lahore High Court’s Justice Ali Baqir Najfi to probe the tragedy.
