Islamabad High Court (IHC) has suspended the notice issued by Shifa Millat Tameer University Islamabad (SMTUI) chancellor about the termination of the appointment of the varsity’s vice chancellor and issued a notice to the former.
A single bench of the IHC, led by Justice Noorul Haq N Qureshi, took up the Dr Kamran Jahangir versus SMTUI chancellor case for hearing on Friday.
Hafiz HA Rehman and Muhammad Anwar Mughal, counsel for the petitioner appeared in the court and said that the post was advertised in the newspaper on March 6, 2013. He said that as many as 13 persons filed applications for this post and the university committee shortlisted three people, including Kamran. The counsel said his client was appointed as vice chancellor of the varsity on June 25, 2014.
The petitioner’s counsel said that Kamran was appointed on a one year contract, instead of a five-year contract, in violation of the University Act, adding that later, the vice chancellor was informed through an e-mail that his services have been terminated.
The court issued notice to SMTUI chancellor, seeking a detailed reply from him on this count and adjourned the hearing of the case indefinitely.
