Capital Development Authority (CDA) Working Development Committee (WDC)’s approval for the construction of a new slaughterhouse in the federal capital has become a bone of contention between butchers and the concerned authority.
A CDA official member administration Amir Ali Ahmed informed that CDA had already obtained a mandatory Environmental Impact Assessment Report (EIAR) of the project from the Pakistan Environmental Protection Agency (PEPA) which has given a seal of approval to the plan as in its absence, people slaughter animals at private slaughterhouses or in the open, adversely impacting the environment.
According to details, the slaughterhouse would be established on 20 acres and the building would be constructed on 10 acres, while a grazing area would be established on the remaining 10 acres.
The slaughterhouse would have the capacity to accommodate 2,000 to 2,500 animals a day and the project would be completed on priority as the authority would recover the amount in three to four years by renting out the facility.
On the contrary, traders have strongly opposed the construction of a new slaughterhouse in the middle of the city and urged the CDA to cancel this project to save the city from stench and environmental pollution.
Islamabad Capital Territory Chamber of Small Traders (ICT CST) President Khalid Mehmood Mian stressed upon the CDA to take back the slaughterhouse, constructed in partnership in Humak, from the provincial government instead of spending millions of rupees on the construction of a new one in Sector H-9, Islamabad.
