PU sportswomen withdraw dope charges against admin

LAHORE

STAFF REPORT

Punjab University (PU) Sports Department dope case fell flat on its face Tuesday when two out of five sportswomen who had alleged that the varsity was forcefully administering them steroids withdrew their allegations saying they had nothing to do with it.

“In an application to the PU Vice Chancellor (VC) Prof Dr Mujahid Kamran, Fozia Perveen and Zoneera Liaqat have submitted that they never signed any application regarding the use of steroids against PU but they were impersonated,” a PU spokesperson said Tuesday.

The spokesperson clarified that three out of six girls, who held a press conference the other day, were not bonafide students of PU as they had represented University of Lahore (UoL) at the recently concluded inter-university competitions. He further said that female rowing players, mentioned in the “false application”, have also denied charges of any steroids.

The PU spokesperson quoted Fouzia and Zoneera as saying, “University Law College Lecturer Khujista Rehan instigated us to file an application and our names were also falsely added in the fire incident of sports hostel a few days back.”

Moreover, a PU player Quratul Ain also submitted an application to the vice chancellor saying that Aqsa Nawaz and Aqsa Rasheed pressurised her to file an application.

The university spokesperson said Aqsa Rasheed told media that she was treated in Mansoorah Hospital, adding that it was quite clear who were behind the propaganda against PU and its players while Bushra Mahmood’s admission was suspended last December due to “short attendance and misbehavior”.

PU VC FORMS COMMITTEE:

In the meanwhile, PU Vice Chancellor (VC) Dr Mujahid Kamran on Tuesday constituted a three-member high level fact finding committee to conduct thorough probe into the allegations pertaining to use of steroids by sportswomen.

The VC said that committee headed by PU Registrar Prof Dr Amin Athar consists of Political Science Department Chairman Prof Dr Umbreen Javaid and Chief Medical Officer Dr Nauman Ahmad.

The committee will conduct probe on day-to-day basis and if the allegations were proved, strict action will be taken against the responsible, VC warned.
