Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Vice Chairman Shah Mehmood Qureshi vowed on Tuesday not to cancel the party’s proposed August 14 ‘tsunami march’.
Speaking to reporters after a meeting with the Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) leadership, Qureshi said that the proposed long march is not an attempt to derail democracy in the country. He said that protesting is democratic right and the PTI’s protest and long march would be within the parameters defined by the constitution and law of Pakistan.
Qureshi said that the PTI has raised the issue of rigging of the 2013 general polls in the parliament, apex court, Election Commission of Pakistan and election tribunals and is now left with no option but to take to the streets.
Qureshi said that the PTI and PML-Q have decided to demand comprehensive reforms in ECP so that future elections are free and transparent.
Speaking on the occasion, PML-Q President Shujaat Hussain said there should be no fears about derailment of democracy in the country as “there is no democracy in the country”.
He said had there been democracy in Pakistan, the Model Town incident would not have occurred.
