The number of internally displaced persons (IDPs) from North Waziristan on Tuesday almost reached 0.8 million, as jet fighters carried out airstrikes on suspected terrorists’ hideouts destroying seven of them while 13 terrorists were also killed during the Zarb-e-Azb operation in the tribal region.

The FATA Disaster Management Authority (FDMA) said on Tuesday that the number of internally displaced persons had almost reached 0.8 million (800,000) in the wake of the Zarb-e-Azb operation. The FDMA data said the total number of internally displaced persons (IDPs) so far registered with the authorities was 787,888.

Moreover, the total number of families counted so far was 62,493, including 211,549 male and 236,883 female members, while the number of children was 339,456.

Furthermore, the registration process for the IDPs in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Peshawar which was stopped on Monday due to mismanagement at the registration point in Hayatabad resumed on Tuesday. The registration of IDPs from the North Waziristan tribal region who had travelled to Peshawar and other northern districts had started on Monday.

Registration of IDPs who shifted to Peshawar to live in rented houses or with host families continued for the second day. According to officials, the displaced people from Boya and Datakhel areas would be registered on Wednesday at Government College of Management Sciences Hayatabad. Tomorrow, IDPs from Mir Ali would be registered while on July 10, displaced people from Dosali and Garyum would be registered.

Razmak and Shawal IDPs are set to be registered on July 11 and affectees from Ghulam Khan would be registered on July 12. The remaining affectees from other areas would be registered on July 14.

After an incident on Monday in which IDPs and FDMA staff scuffled, authorities banned media persons’ entry to the centre.

The registration of IDPs who had travelled to southern districts was also underway in Bannu, where three registration centres had been established.

The FDMA spokesman had said the government was determined to register every displaced person in order to ensure speedy distribution of relief amount, goods and other services so that no family was deprived of the facilities.

AIRSTRIKES IN DEGAN:

Meanwhile, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) confirmed that the airstrikes were carried out early morning in the Degan area of North Waziristan. Army sources claimed that seven militant hideouts were destroyed and 13 terrorists, including foreigners, were killed in airstrikes in Degan. The death toll, however, could not be independently verified.

The strikes came a day after Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif visited the troops in North Waziristan.

The army chief during his visit emphasised that the forces must eliminate all local and foreign terrorists and their sanctuaries. He had also commended the entire chain of command for its “determined effort in planning, preparation, mobilisation and execution of the operation”.

So far more than 400 suspected terrorists, mostly foreigners, have been killed during the operation while at least 19 IED-making factories have also been unearthed by security forces in parts of Miranshah, the main town in North Waziristan.
