The Supreme Court (SC) has summoned a final report from the federation and provinces on July 17 on the practical steps taken by them for provision of wheat flour to the poor at subsidised rates.

A three-member SC bench presided over by Justice Jawwad Khawaja took up the petition by Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) leader Liaqat Baloch on the provision of flour on subsidised rates for hearing on Tuesday.

Additional Attorney General (AAG) Atiq Shah and law officers of the provinces also appeared in the court.

During the proceedings, Justice Khawaja said that government officials should serve the common man and come up with a plan to make flour available to the poor at subsidised rates.

He said that more than nine months have elapsed but there is no workable solution visible in this respect.

He said that running the government is the job of the elected representatives of the people but the “implementation of articles 9, 14 and 38 is our obligation.”

“We will not allow the poor to famish despite the abundant supply of wheat grains,” said the judge.

The hearing of the case was adjourned till July 17.
