Jillani retires, Justice Nasir will take oath as new CJP today

Justice Nasirul Mulk will take oath as new chief justice of Pakistan (CJP) today (Sunday) at the Aiwan-e-Sadr after Justice Tassaduq Hussain Jillani retired from the post on Saturday.

Justice Jillani served for more than ten years as a judge and CJ of the apex court.

Justice Nasir, the senior-most judge after the Justice Jillani, has already been appointed as the new CJP.

President Mamnoon Hussain will administer oath to the newly appointed CJP. Judges of the SC, judges of the Federal Shariat Court and Islamabad High Court, SC Bar Association president, attorney general of Pakistan, Pakistan Bar Council vice chairman, senior advocates, federal ministers will attend the ceremony.

Justice Nasir will be eligible to hold the office of CJP till August 16, 2015.

Justice Nasir belongs to Swat, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and did Barrister-at-Law from Inner Temple, London in 1976.

He has delivered lectures in Khyber Law College, Peshawar and Peshawar University. He practiced as an advocate for more than 17 years till his elevation as Peshawar High Court judge. He also served as PHC CJ for some time before his elevation as judge of the Supreme Court.

He was elected as Peshawar High Court Bar Association secretary general in 1981 He was twice elected as PHCBA president in 1990 and 1993. He was also NWFP AG in 1993.

He was appointed as PHC judge in 1994 and elevated as PHC CJ in 2004.

He was appointed as a SC judge in 2005 and has served as chairman of Federal Review Board of Pakistan, since 2009.

Presently, he is serving as acting chief of the Election Commission of Pakistan and Federal Judicial Academy Judge Incharge.

Justice Nasir also participated in international symposiums, including International Judicial Training Conference, Spain in 2007, World Justice Forum-II Austria Center Vienna, 2009, The International Association of Supreme Administrative Jurisdictions (IASAJ) 2010 Congress, Australia. He also headed a delegation of judges and legal fraternity of the country on a visit to United States of America in 2013.
