Imran’s conditions

The flip flopping politician seems to be learning a lesson or two

Imran Khan has started flip flopping like traditional politicians. Last week at a public meeting in Bahawalpur he declared that circumstances had overtaken the demand for verification of votes in four disputed constituencies. He challenged the legitimacy of the entire electoral exercise and put up four demands of which the government fulfilled one as the information minister took responsibility for the advice to Nawaz Sharif to deliver the victory speech. Pervez Rashid, however, maintained there was nothing wrong about it. The other three demands amounted to charges that the government was called upon to accept. The government was understandably unwilling to undertake an exercise in self-incrimination, all the more so as it considered the charges flimsy.

In what amounts to a volte-face Imran Khan has again taken up the issue of the four constituencies. He says he is willing to call off the August 14 long march on Islamabad if the Supreme Court opens a probe into ‘rigging’ in these constituencies. .The demands in fact amount to dictations to the Supreme Court. Imran Khan can at best request the apex court to investigate the election fraud charges. He cannot order it, nor can the government. The Supreme Court is an independent constitutional body rather than a government department. The court may agree to accept the plea or reject it taking the stand that it is not the right forum to resolve the election disputes. And how can anyone direct the court regarding the number of the members of the enquiry commission or that it finish the enquiry and deliver its verdict in two weeks? What Imran Khan suggests is frivolous.

While one does not agree with the tactics being employed by Imran Khan, one agrees that his grievances need to be resolved. The case of Tahirul Qadri is however altogether different. The man is out to destroy the system. Imran Khan, being the leader of the third largest party in NA, would reduce his own stature by becoming a party to the cleric’s game.

  1. I am not a fan of Qadri, but if the system is rotten, then it does need to be destroyed

    • If you need an organ transplant then first always you have to arrange for an organ that needs to be transplanted, otherwise you will die. First bring a complete system that will destroy this so called ROTTEN SYSTEM. If you or people like IK and Tahir cant bring such a system, they have no right to destabilize the existing system.

  2. By the way why our media celebrates this sham democracy, rather elected oligarchy. You may unleash a barrage of expletives against Qadri but he has repeatedly sounded much closer to disillusionment of masses with this so called system. System is simple true accountability of all and institutionalised decision making. Level of our incumbent legislators can be easily gauged from undue haste in passing draconian law :Protection of Pakistan Bill.
