Sharjeel Memon has taken notice of water shortage in Karachi and has ordered immediate repair of pipelines. He is looking at the wrong end of the problem; the solution does not lie in Karachi but in the north of the country where our reserves of fresh water are going down instead of up.
Does he know that no fresh water has been added to the system since Tarbela dam was built 38 years ago, while the population has gone up from 8 crore to 19 crore over that period.
What is more, no more fresh water in any sizable quantity is planned to be added to the system for another ten years, a total of 48 years without a new reservoir in a country with the mighty Indus spilling over into the Arabian sea every year, 18 maf in 2013 to be exact, when our reserves are only 14 maf at best.
If Sharjeel Memon wants to save the people of Karachi from Thar like misery, he has to take notice of the water that we are letting go waste while people go thirsty and hungry. Water is food and food is life
