Nearly 48,808 under trial prisoners and convicts including 884 female inmates confined in 32 jails across the province would observe fast during the holy month of Ramadan.

Special efforts have been made on the direction of Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif for immaculate arrangements for proper Sehr and Iftar of Muslim prisoners.

Punjab IG Prisons Mian Farooq Nazeer said Sunday that special lectures on Islamic values would be delivered to inmates by the religious personalities at jail mosques on daily basis. He said that DIGs Headquarters and Inspection had also been directed to pay frequent surprise visits to check and standard of food and discipline. He said that all the doctors posted in the jails had been directed to check the quality of food before it was cooked and served.

Lahore Range IG Mubashar Ahmad Khan said that a total of 19,318 inmates are confined in seven jails of the region who will observe fast. He told that he will visit jails at the time of Iftar and Sehr to check the quality of food and check security measures.

Lahore Camp Jail Superintendent Shahram Tauqeer Khan when contacted told that no female prisoner is housed in prisons while 2,248 under trial prisoners will observe fast. He said that security in and around the prisons had already been beefed up in the wake of military operation against terrorists.
