SC directs police to arrest former AG’s killer

Accused Roohullah has allegedly absconded to Afghanistan

The Supreme Court directed the Inspector General of Police Islamabad on Friday to take concrete steps to arrest accused Roohullah, involved in the murder of former attorney general Sardar Muhammad Khan.

The three-member bench of the apex court headed by Chief justice Tassaduq Hussain Jilani comprising Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed and Justice Mushir Alam resumed hearing of the suo-moto notice case in the murder of former AG Sardar Muhamamd Khan.

During the course of proceedings, the inspector general police (IGP) informed the court that police was trying to arrest the accused but he has escaped to Afghanistan. He sought more time to arrest the killer.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Additional AG informed the court that the provincial government has started the process of confiscation of the accused’s property and his property was taken under the custody of provincial government.

He said that police has handed over the large shipment of weapons to the Intelligence Bureau and Frontier Constabulary hauled from Karachi.

The chief justice directed the police to take steps to arrest the accused from Afghanistan and bring him back and also directed to fasten the process of his property confiscation.

The hearing of the case was adjourned for three weeks.

Sardar Khan was gunned down in the capital city in February 2010 while making an attempt to break free from his kidnappers. The lawyer had received a volley of bullets and could only be identified by his close relatives. The case remained a headache for investigators for quite some time before they traced it to a woman, Rubina.

But the case became more complicated when police found Rubina dead in her apartment in Bhara Kahu. Investigations revealed that the two murders were inter-linked.

According to police, the lawyer was contesting a case from the side of Peshawar Development Authority (PDA) for a 140 kanals of land, which was allegedly in illegal possession of accused Roohullah Khan.

Roohullah Khan initially tried to bribe the lawyer but failed. As a backup plan, the suspect tried to kidnap Sardar when he visited his daughter’s house in Islamabad in February 2010.

Rubina, who was later found killed in Bhara Kahu, had contacted him on phone, requesting to contest a case of her relative and seeking a meeting with him. He was kidnapped from sector G-11 in Rubina’s car and was killed when he tried to jump out of the speeding car, in which he was being transferred to Peshawar.

Accused Roohullah Khan escaped from a RawalpindiHospital in August 2012 with the help of Adiala Jail staff and hospital administration and ran to Afghanistan.
