The Sindh excise and taxation department did not organise any event to burn narcotics recovered during 2014 in the province on the eve of World Anti-Narcotics Day being observed today.
Talking to PPI, Karachi Excise Department Director Noor Mohammad Odhano said that he had informed higher authorities about burning narcotics material cleared from courts and ready to be burn.
Giving details of the narcotics material ready to be burn, Odhano said that it included 420.431 kg of charas, 4.125 kg heroin, 120 kg bhang and 127 bottles having 252 liters of illicit liquor. “We conveyed regarding this material to the higher-ups in the department but the destruction ceremony was postponed for unknown reasons and it would be re-organized after Ramazan,” he said.
The excise director said that the narcotics and liquor collected in other districts were also not destroyed due to court orders and it would be destroyed soon.
He said that the excise department was carrying out raids in different localities in the metropolis to end this menace while strict checking was also ensured on the city outskirts in order to nab people involved in smuggling these products within the city.
Giving details of his directorate’s performance from July 2013 to May 2014, he said that they had confiscated 90 kg of heroin, 28 kg of charas, 10 kg of bhang, 12 bottles of imported liquor, 1297 liters of different local liquor and 40 bottles of bear.
“We have also seized different vehicles involved in smuggling narcotics which include a Parado Jeep, a car, a taxi, two motorcycles and a rickshaw,” he said, adding that 90 kg of heroin was recovered from the Parado jeep. He said the department had also arrested 63 people involved in smuggling narcotics and liquor, which were later handed over to police which then registered 61 cases against them.
He said that although the department did not destroy the narcotics within their possession, however, they carried out massive awareness campaign in the city regarding the hazards of the narcotics on the eve of World Anti-Narcotics Day. “We had put banners at different city locations while pamphlets were also distributed at bus stops and traffic signals by the department in order to create awareness among the masses,” he concluded.
