HEC chairman says varsities will host capacity building workshops

Public sector universities will soon host capacity building workshops for their non-teaching staff within the next three months, said Higher Education Commission (HEC) Chairman Dr Mukhtar Ahmed in his recent address to vice chancellors through a video conference.

The proposed trainings are aimed at improving the efficiency of universities and promote good governance on campuses.

Dr Ahmed informed the VCs that HEC had already prepared training modules which will include Finance, Audit, Good Governance, Presentation Skills, IT Equipment Management Skills, Quality Assurance, Hostel Management, Intra Departmental Communication, Communication Skills with Youth, Administration Skills, and Writing Skills along with Professional Ethics and Effective Public Dealing.

The indigenous on-campus training will include non-teaching staff from universities and colleges/ affiliated colleges while participants will be from management cadre BPS-16 and above. The training will take place in summer vacations.

The HEC chairman stressed the need for the suggested trainings to bridge the distance between all universities stakeholders. The HEC will finance the proposed programme.

The participants appreciated the trainings and further discussed competencies of the entire university non- teaching staff that needed to be addressed. It was stressed that the staff must be provided a holistic view of the university functions so as to enable them to fully address the students/parents’ queries especially details of the programmes being run by universities to further improve the systems already in place.

Welcoming the HEC initiative, the vice chancellors said that such an exercise would increase effectiveness and lessen the communication gap between different stakeholders within and outside the universities.
