A cleric belonging to the Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat (ASWJ) was gunned down near Khayaban-e-Sir Syed in Rawalpindi on Tuesday.
According to details, Maulana Izharul Haq Farooqi, the vice president of ASWJ Banny Chowk Unit, was returning home after visiting another ASWJ leader Farooq Muavia at the Holy Family Hospital when gunmen riding a motorcycle attacked him near Khayaban-e-Sir Syed. The attackers managed to flee from the scene.
The IG Punjab took notice of the incident and has asked RPO Rawalpindi to submit a report. Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif also took notice of the attack and has sought a report on the incident.
A number of ASWJ members have been targeted recently. Last Thursday, unidentified armed men gunned down an activist of ASWJ and injured two others in Quetta. The incident resulted in killing of Khalil Ahmed and injuring Zahoor Ahmed and Shehzad.
