The Supreme Court of Pakistan on Monday directed Sindh police to submit a comprehensive report outlining the details of accused arrested during the ongoing targeted operation in Karachi and how many of the accused have been charge sheeted yet.

A three-member bench headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Tassaduq Hussain Jilani heard Karachi law and order implementation case at the apex court’s Karachi registry.

At the outset of hearing, AIG (legal) Ali Sher Jakhrani submitted a report on overall law and order situation of the city. “How many of the accused arrested by police have been charge sheeted,” the bench questioned Jakharani. He sought some time to submit details of accused challaned in different cases.

The bench expressed its concern over the performance of police in ensuring that accused arrested by them would be able to stand trial. It allowed AIG Jakhrani some time to submit a comprehensive report regarding details of accused challaned so far.

The report submitted by police said since the inception of targeted operation, 17,140 accused were charge sheeted which included 411 accused in murder cases, 137 in target killings, 173 in extortion, 105 in kidnapping for ransom, 620 in robbery, 612 in street crime, 4,935 in illegal arms and 6,639 in other crimes.

However, the police have submitted charge sheets in 14,162 cases. The report stated that a total of 939 cases were filed in anti-terrorism courts during the ongoing targeted operation. Out of total, 70 cases were decided and accused involved in such cases were handed down punishments.
