Opposition parties in the Punjab Assembly (PA) on Thursday continued their protest and held a walkout after the PA speaker declined to entertain their resolution condemning the Model Town incident.
As the session started, Opposition Leader Mian Mehmoodur Rashid sought the permission to table the resolution to mourn the deaths of Pakistan Awami Tehrik (PAT) workers, which was not allowed by PA Speaker Rana Mohammed Iqbal.
Upon this, the Opposition members gathered in front of the PA speaker’s dias and raised slogans. Paying no heed to the speaker’s repeated requests and exchanging harsh words with treasury members, they walked out of the House.
In the meanwhile, as proceedings of the House continued, Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah told the House that the enquiry commission had initiated probe into the incident and in light of its report, the responsible would be brought to justice.
The minister said everyone was sad over the incident. He said on the instructions of chief minister, a delegation of provincial ministers would visit Minhajul Quran Secretariat to offer condolence with PAT leadership. He urged the opposition not to exploit the issue for political mileage.
The minister affirmed categorically that no one would be allowed to make the country hostage at gun point. In the meantime, the opposition members staged a protest demonstration at the assembly building’s stairs.
