The Peace Education and Development Foundation (PEAD) in collaboration with UNESCO organised a one-day awareness workshop on Monday, for teachers in Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) to raise awareness amongst their students to adopt safety measures to avoid landmines and unexploded ordnances (UOs) in the region.

A total of 35 master trainers from Peshawar, Jalozai Camp and lower Kurram Agency participated in the training session in Peshawar.

Professional trainers, including senior officials of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Civil Defense Department, trained the participations on how to remain safe from landmines and UOs.

UNESCO Islamabad Senior Education Officer SK Kamrani, PEAD Foundation Executive Director Sameena Imtiaz and PEAD Program Manager Tariq Hayat were present at the occasion.

The participants were informed that FATA and other conflict hit areas of KP are most affected by landmines, thus putting the lives of the people being exposed to them, at risk.

Children often become victims of toy-like bombs and mines excavated by insurgents, due to lack of knowledge and awareness.

Addressing the participants, Kamrani said that trained teachers should impart knowledge to their students for taking preventive measures against the hazards of landmines and UOs in conflict-hit areas of FATA and KP.

The participants were taught first-aid skills as well as preventive and safety measures in case of any emergency.

During the training, different types of mines and improvised explosive devices were also shown to the participants.

The PEAD program manager said that preventive measures help save precious lives in war and conflict stricken areas.

He said that under as per the current project, 100 master trainers and 500 children will be trained and tasked to create awareness about safety measures against landmines and UOs.
