- Nawaz says govt working with USAID to organise investors’ conference for Diamer-Bhasha dam
Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has said that the government’s rational economic policies have developed the confidence of foreign donor agencies in Pakistan and the vision of making Pakistan a self-sufficient economy will soon be realised.
The PM said this while praising the efforts of Finance Minister Ishaq Dar and the Finance Ministry in its efforts to realise the World Bank’s (WB) $700 million loan for Pakistan.
The WB in its meeting on 11 May, 2014 had approved a total of $700 million worth loan for two projects. The assistance is meant for 4,500MW Dasu hydropower project ($600 million) and Sindh water irrigation project ($100 million).
Nawaz said the confidence of WB was also evident from the already approved $1 billion for budgetary support to Pakistan. “The WB’s support and commitment with Pakistan reflects their confidence in the leadership and vision of our government,” Nawaz added.
He said, “The Dasu hydropower project will not only improve the water storage and irrigation system of Pakistan but also provide 4500MW of power to our power-starved economy.”
He said, “We have embarked upon a journey of development and our economic policies have shown positive results. Our economic policies have resulted in raising the foreign investor’s interest in Pakistan and in last one year the foreign investment has gained substantial increase. We will fulfill the promises made with the nation to make Pakistan self-sufficient in energy and water resources.”
He added that the government was working with the USAID to organise an international investors’ conference for Diamer-Bhasha dam.
