Angelina Jolie’s hard work came to fruition on Tuesday (10Jun14) as she kicked off an innovative summit in London aimed at stopping rape in war zones.
The Hollywood actress, who is a United Nations special envoy for refugees, has been working with the U.K.’s Foreign Secretary William Hague to put together the Global Summit to End Sexual Violence in Conflict, gathering representatives from more than 140 countries around the globe.
The conference, which will be attended by the heads of United Nations agencies, charities and experts, began on Tuesday, and Jolie joined Hague at London’s ExCeL centre to officially launch the event.
She told reporters, “I’m so happy to be here. It’s been long coming, we’ve worked on this for quite a while… We are so happy you’re here, we’ve very, very grateful and look forward to this summit. It truly is a summit like no other. Thank you so much for coming.”
The event runs until Thursday (12 June 2014).
