A meeting of the World Punjabi Congress was chaired by its Chairman Fakhar Zaman at a local hotel on Saturday.
It was decided that the promotion of Punjabi language and culture should be made through social media and by people-to-people contact. It was further decided that a one-day national conference on Punjab, Punjabi culture and Punjabi will be held in Lahore on June June 22, 2014 wherein the scholars and intellectuals of all languages will be invited as delegates. A session will also be devoted to Punjabi films wherein known film personalities will take part in it. It was also decided that Punjabi language should be freed from purist attitude and use of archaic words and worn out clichés and be replaced by new diction, fresh images in accordance with the need of the present cyber age. Fakhar Zaman emphasised that Punjabi text books from middle to Masters Level had retrogressive contents and all progressive Punjabi writings have been neglected criminally. He declared that a committee will be formed by the WPC to revise all textbooks at all levels and devise new curriculum. It was also decided that efforts will be accelerated for the establishment of first ever Punjabi University and declaring Punjabi to be taught at primary level.
The chairman said that the WPC will be revamped and to start with some new appointments have been made such as Tariq Khurshid, Rana Ehtesham Rabbani and Hafeez Sheikh to be the new vice presidents, Iftikhar Mijaz as the media advisor and Riaz Chaudhry as finance secretary and Shahid as secretary record and event. In the end, the WPC resolved that that they welcome the visit of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to India at the oath-taking ceremony of Narendra Modi.
Fakhar Zaman concluded that the WPC has been striving for better relations between the two countries by the resumption of trade relations, issuance of multiple visas, and the exchange of cultural and education delegations. He hoped that the process of peace efforts will be accelerated by discouraging the conspiracies of fanatic elements and bureaucrats, both in India and Pakistan.
