Minister says transparency, meritocracy and fairness are hallmark of government
Information Minister Pervaiz Rashid said on Tuesday that rule of law was a prerequisite for democracy.
Talking to representatives of various district bars, the minister said that the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz government was committed to turning Pakistan into a true democratic society governed by rule of law.
Rashid, who is also the federal law minister, said that the societies, which were governed by law and constitution, were cherished all over the world as they provided equal opportunities for economic betterment and social development to the people.
“Democracy thrives where no one is above the law and even leaders are held accountable for their actions,” he added.
He said that transparency, meritocracy and fairness had been the hallmark of their government. It went to the credit of the government that not even a single case of financial irregularity or corruption had come to the fore, said Rashid.
He lamented that in the past grants were given to various bars on discriminatory basis. The government would ensure the release of grants on the principle of equality and irrespective of political affiliations, he assured.
The minister said the government was a trustee of the public money and it could not even think of breaching that trust.
He applauded the role of legal fraternity in the historic lawyers movement, which not only led to independence of judiciary but also proved to be instrumental in democratic transition from a dictatorial rule.
The lawyers also expressed their problems and concerns, which the minister assured to resolve at the earliest.
On his directives, the Law Ministry distributed cheques among the representatives of various bars from all over the country.
It may be noted that the federal government has earmarked a total of Rs 50 million for district bars.
Law Secretary Zafrullah Khan and Law Special Secretary Muhammad Raza Khan were also present.
