A report on KANUPP II and KANUPP III states that building large scale dams has been irretrievably politicised. This means that Pakistan’s status as an agricultural country has also been irretrievably politicised. Small and medium dams can never bridge the ever increasing gap between supply and demand. The predicted water crisis will hit us long before Bhasha dam is built. It will also not utilise the waters of the Indus tributaries south of Tarbela dam. The flood waters of Kabul, Chitral, Swat, Kurram, Siren, Haro and Soan will keep devastating south Punjab and Sindh every year. We have to sell Kalabagh dam to the people who quite mistakenly think that it will reduce flow in the Indus, that Punjab will steal Sindh’s water, and that Sindh will become a desert if Kalabagh dam is built. Nothing can save Sindh from becoming a desert if Kalabagh dam is not built.
