PEMRA summons 3 news channels for airing objectionable content

Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) Complaint Council has summoned the administrative authorities of ARY News, Express News and Dunya News over telecasting objectionable content multiple times on their respective channels.

A PEMRA spokesman said that the decision to summon the authorities of the channels was taken on the complaints received by the people.

In the meantime, PEMRA has declared the re-positioning of private television channel, Geo News, illegal.

The spokesperson said that pushing Geo channels to later numbers by cable operators is in violation of PEMRA rules. Therefore, PEMRA has issued a notice to the cable operators and sought their response.

It may also be mentioned here that the government has decided to act against three PEMRA members and has issued show cause notices to Israr Abbasi, Mian Shams and Fareeha Ikhtiar.

These officials had, without any authority, recently announced the suspension of Geo’s three licenses after a meeting that was declared illegal soon afterwards by the PEMRA spokesman.
